Cleaner cities through smarter Clean Air Zones and Low Emission Zones.

We help you design, deliver and enforce Clean Air Zones and Low Emission Zones that reduce harmful emissions, improve public health and ensure long-term compliance.

With proven experience supporting 6 of the 17 Clean Air Zones and LEZs across the UK (including Scottish LEZs), VidAlert delivers enforcement that drives real-world environmental and health outcomes – not just policy targets.

We turn air quality policy into practical action that improves health, cuts emissions, and creates greener communities.

Clean Air Zones only work when enforcement is accurate, consistent and trusted. We help you:

  • Reduce NO₂ and harmful vehicle emissions
  • Improve public health outcomes across urban centres
  • Support cleaner transport choices and behaviour change
  • Ensure fair and consistent compliance enforcement
  • Deliver measurable, long-term air quality improvements
  • Enable localised air quality monitoring to measure before-and-after scheme performance

From initial scheme design through to live enforcement, monitoring and ongoing optimisation, we manage the full lifecycle. VidAlert supports enforcement across:

Real-time detection and hotspot analysis.

Emissions, compliance, and behaviour reporting.

Air quality monitoring insights (before vs after impact).

Performance dashboards for decision-making.

We remove the complexity of delivering Clean Air Zones by managing every stage.

From strategic planning to ongoing optimisation, we remove complexity so authorities can focus on delivering cleaner, healthier communities.

Scheme design and planning

Supporting feasibility, modelling and enforcement strategy.

Implementation and rollout

From system setup through to integration and commissioning.

Live enforcement

AI-powered ANPR ensures accurate, consistent detection of non-compliant vehicles.

Ongoing monitoring and optimisation

Including localised air quality monitoring to track real-world improvements before and after scheme implementation, alongside continuous reporting and performance refinement.

“Technology enables reliable enforcement of Glasgow’s Low Emission Zone, helping identify non-compliant vehicles efficiently while supporting our goal of improving air quality and creating a healthier environment. The results have been encouraging and support our long-term environmental ambitions.”

Glasgow City Council

Glasgow-lez

Glasgow Low Emission Zone.

Glasgow’s LEZ is one of the UK’s clearest examples of how enforcement drives measurable environmental change. Launched in June 2023, the scheme introduced strict emissions standards for vehicles entering the city centre—removing non-compliant vehicles and prioritising cleaner air for residents.

Key outcomes:

Up to 34% reduction in air pollution.

21% reduction in NO₂ recorded outside the zone boundary.

£1m+ in fines, with £747k reinvested in
clean air and greening.

City now meets all legal air quality targets for the first time in 30 years.

VidAlert supports cleaner transport choices.

Clean Air Zones are not just about restriction – they drive change. VidAlert helps accelerate:

  • Adoption of electric and hybrid vehicles
  • Increased use of public transport and active travel
  • Reduction in high-emission vehicle usage in city centres
  • Long-term behavioural change across urban networks.

How VidAlert delivers
cleaner cities: FAQs.

What is a Clean Air Zone (CAZ) or Low-Emission Zone?

A Clean Air Zone (CAZ) is an area where measures reduce vehicle emissions and improve air quality. The most polluting vehicles may be charged to enter, encouraging cleaner transport and helping authorities meet legal air quality targets. The difference between the two is that Clean Air Zones are schemes that are enforced in England and Wales, while Low-Emission Zones are schemes enforced in Scotland

Which local authorities does VidAlert support?

VidAlert supports Clean Air Zones and Low Emission Zones across the UK, including six of the UK’s 17 operational CAZ and LEZ schemes.

What results have Clean Air Zones achieved?

CAZ and LEZ schemes have delivered measurable air quality improvements. For example, Glasgow’s LEZ has reduced pollution, cut NO₂ levels, and enabled the city to meet legal air quality objectives for the first time in 30 years.

How do you monitor the effectiveness of Clean Air Zones (CAZs) and Low Emission Zones (LEZs)?

VidAlert combines enforcement with localised air quality monitoring, allowing authorities to measure emissions, traffic volumes, vehicle compliance and network performance before and after implementation.
